Most people arrive with a version of the same story. Something has been wrong for a while. The bloodwork came back normal. They were told nothing is wrong, or handed a prescription that manages the symptom without touching whatever produces it.

Functional medicine starts from a different question. Not "which condition fits these symptoms" but "what is going on in this person that keeps producing them". That means looking at systems rather than parts: digestion, hormones, immune function, blood sugar, sleep, stress load, nutrient status and exposure history, and how they interact. Fatigue plus bloating plus a low mood plus three kilos that will not shift is usually not four problems. It is often one, with four faces.

The second half is timing. When did it start, and what else changed that year? A course of antibiotics, a bereavement, a house move, a new medication, a pregnancy, a year of bad sleep. The history is where the answer usually is, which is why the first appointment is mostly listening.

How It Works

How It Differs From a Standard Workup

This is worth setting out carefully, because a lot of functional medicine marketing is built on running down conventional doctors, and that is neither fair nor useful.

Those are different jobs, not competing ones. Conventional medicine is excellent at the thing it was built for, and if you have a disease you want it found by someone using those tools. What it is not designed to do is explain why an otherwise healthy person has felt below par for two years.

The same honesty applies to the content. Some of what is done under the functional medicine banner is well supported: correcting a genuine nutrient deficiency, identifying and removing a food that provokes you, treating a confirmed infection, and the unglamorous work on sleep, movement, alcohol and stress that changes more than any supplement. Some of it is not well supported, and parts of the industry sell testing and protocols that the evidence does not carry.

Our position is to say which is which as we go, including when the honest answer is that a test is not worth your money or that we are not the right people for the problem. For our part, the answer to that question is on the record: Dr. Gail Ravello is board certified by the American Naturopathic Medical Certification Board (ANMCB) , holds a Ph.D. in Alternative and Integrative Medicine (PhD-IMD) from Quantum University and a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) from Trinity School of Natural Health, and has practised for more than 36 years. The full list of qualifications and professional memberships is on her profile . The same plain treatment is on our pages for hyperbaric oxygen and infrared sauna . It is there on detoxification as well, where the industry claims are furthest ahead of the evidence.

What to Know

What a First Visit Involves

Longer than you are used to, and mostly conversation.

Longer than you are used to, and mostly conversation.

The new patient guide covers what to bring, and our wellness center page covers the building and everything offered in it.

  • A full history taken properly, including the parts that seem unrelated
  • A timeline: what started when, and what else was happening
  • Every medication and supplement you take, including interactions people rarely think to check
  • Any recent bloodwork or imaging you can bring, which often saves repeating it
  • Diet as it actually is in a normal week, not as it is on a good one
  • A plan, which is usually fewer changes than people expect

Testing answers a question the history has already raised. It is not a substitute for asking, and a panel ordered without a question behind it mostly generates numbers to worry about.

The full menu is on the functional medicine testing page . Our post on testing before a detox shows how results actually change a plan.

  • Food sensitivity and allergy panels , used to shape an elimination trial rather than to hand you a verdict
  • Digestive and stool analysis , including H. pylori , parasites and candida
  • Hormone, thyroid and adrenal panels , where the pattern across the day matters more than one value
  • Micronutrient and organic acid testing for the deficiencies that quietly account for a lot of fatigue
  • Heavy metals, mould and environmental chemicals , when the exposure history points somewhere specific

The initial visit is $195 . Laboratory fees are billed separately by the laboratory itself and are not part of the visit fee, so you will always be told what a panel costs before it is ordered rather than after. HSA and Flex plans can often be used, and some conventional lab work ordered during your care is commonly reimbursed. Full detail, including CareCredit, is on the finances page .

Call your insurer before your first visit and ask specifically about out-of-network reimbursement and laboratory coverage. It is a ten-minute phone call that occasionally saves a lot.

Four words get used as if they were interchangeable, and they are not. Holistic is an approach, whole person rather than one part. Naturopathic is a discipline with its own training and therapies. Integrative is a model of care, natural and conventional working together. Functional is a method : systems thinking plus targeted testing to work out what is actually going on. In this practice all four overlap constantly.
